It's Christmas day, and my gift to you is the following tutorial. Before diving into it though, I want to welcome a new member to the CEC team! stinson has generously offered to offer new Creative Effects Challenges beginning in two weeks. In Creative Effects Challenge No. 104 I presented a technique for creating a Detailed Sketch Effect. This one is similar, but it is particularly well-suited to portraits since it tends to leave out unwanted details like blemishes and wrinkles while focusing on the main features we want to see, such as the person's eyes, lips and hair. I studied several tutorials written for Photoshop-proper to make one tailored for Elements. - Duplicate the Background layer (Ctrl+J)
- Desaturate the layer (Ctrl+Shift+U)
- Duplicate the desaturated layer (Ctrl+J)
- Invert the new layer (Ctrl+I)
- Change its blend mode to Color Dodge (image now appears as white)
- Apply the Gaussian Blur filter (Filter | Blur | Gaussian Blur...)
- Stamp all layers together (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E)
- Duplicate the top layer and change its blend mode to Multiply to darken the effect
- Reduce the Opacity to your liking
If you would like to add a hint of color back into your sketch, continue with these steps: - Duplicate the background layer (Ctrl-J)
- Drag the new background copy to the top of the layer stack
- Change the blend mode to Color or Color Burn
- Lower the layer opacity according to your taste
Here is my result; I am looking forward to seeing yours!
